Earlier this year, Southborough Youth & Family Services and the Southborough Library promoted a new community book group for those who like to read and learn. The concept was to tackle the book a few chapters at a time, with group discussions along the way.
This winter, they’ll take on their second book. It’s geared to helping participants “Learn how to navigate depression and anxiety as they may creep in during the darker months of the year.”
If you’re interested, you may want to sign up now to get your book soon and get started on your reading in time for the first discussion. (Especially if you are finding that this holiday season is triggering/worsening depression in you or a loved one.)
The January through March session of meetings will be focused on The Upward Spiral: Using neuroscience to reverse the course of depression, one small change at a time by Alex Korb. The publisher describes:
Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you into a vortex of sadness, fatigue, and apathy. . .
neuroscientist Alex Korb demystifies the neurological processes in the brain that cause depression and offers effective ways to get better. . . In the book, you’ll discover that there isn’t “one big solution” that will solve your depression. Instead, there are dozens of small, practical things you can do to alleviate your symptoms and start healing. Some are as simple as relaxing certain muscles to reduce feelings of anxiety, while others involve making small efforts toward more positive social interactions. Small steps in the right direction can have profound effects giving you the power to literally “reshape” your brain.
The discussion group is scheduled to meet 4:00 – 5:30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Southborough Library on the main floor. Copies of the books will be available for each participant through the Southborough Library. For the first meeting on January 14th, readers should complete “Part 1” (which runs through page 74).

If this particular book doesn’t speak to you, you may still want to reach out or keep an eye out for the following session this spring. In April – June 2025, the group will discuss Fourteen Talks By Age Fourteen: the essential conversations you need to have with your kids before they start high school – and how (best) to have them by Michelle Icard
