Solstice Walk, Christmas & Hanukkah celebrations, and a Children's Author Visit

This weekend has some fun in store. But things get pretty quiet for the events calendar next week in town as many residents focus on time with family and friends (plus religious services). Here are highlights.

Friday, December 20, 2024

  • Southborough Safe Spaces – Youth Meeting (7:00 – 9:00 pm) @ St Mark’s Episcopal Church parish hall, 27 Main St: Event for grades 6-12 hosted by Southborough Safe Spaces for LBGTQ+ youth of all faiths and their allies. Tonight, they’ll hold their Holi-gay Party. For details, see their Facebook post or Instagram post.

  • Pilgrim’s Family Christmas Breakfast and Carol Sing (8:15 am) @ Pilgrim Congregational Church’s Fellowship Hall, 15 Common St: Sponsored by Pilgrim Men’s Fellowship. Coffee will be served at 8:15, and breakfast starts at 8:30. Jim Duncan will accompany on piano as attendees sing over pancakes and eggs and bacon.
  • Hanukkah Party & Day of Giving (10:15 am) @ Congregation B’nai Shalom, Westborough: Kids party with food and children’s musician. Includes children’s clothing collection drive.   • Read to a Dog (10:30 – 11:30 am) @ Southborough Library, Children’s Room: Register for kids ages 5+ to get a chance to read to a therapy dog. For details, see related post.
  • Winter Solstice Walk (4:30 – 6:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: A gathering in the Deerfoot Barn followed by a stroll in the dark, a solstice story at the firepit, and reflecting on wishes for the next year. Pre-registration (and fee) required. For details, see event page.
  • St. Anne’s Christmas Pageant (6:00 pm) @ St. Anne’s Church, 20 Boston Rd: Children’s pageant, dinner, and basket raffle after the 5:00 pm mass.

Monday, December 23, 2024

  • Public School winter break: NSBORO’s really started with an early dismissal on Friday. Assabet’s begins today. (NSBORO schools resume on January 2nd. Assabet’s return is January 6th.)
  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Knitting Club & Quilting Club (1:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Opportunity for seniors to work on their knitting and quilting projects in a social setting — scheduled to meet weekly.

Tuesday, December 24, 2024

  • Holiday Closures: The Senior Center will close early at noon. The Library is closed for the day on Christmas Eve. Conservation’s office is closed today through January 2nd. (Most other Town offices are generally open this day, but there may be a lot of people on vacation or working remotely.)
  • Christmas Eve religious services @ Southborough churches: Stay tuned for my annual dedicated post listing Christmas Masses, Candlelight Services, Carols, Pageants & Celebrations at the churches in town.
  • Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night (8:00 – 10:00 pm) @ Owen O’Leary’s, 50 Turnpike Rd: Weekly Trivia game night with prizes. For details, see dedicated post.

Wednesday, December 25, 2024

  • Holiday Closures: Town offices, the Southborough Library, the Senior Center, and the Transfer Station will all be closed for the federal holiday.
  • Christmas Day religious services @ Southborough churches: Stay tuned for my annual dedicated post listing Christmas Masses in town..

Thursday, December 26, 2024

  • Holiday Closures: Town offices, the Senior Center, and the Transfer Station will all be closed the day after Christmas. (The Library is open for regular hours.)
  • Karaoke (9:00 pm) @ Owen O’Leary’s, 50 Turnpike Rd: Come and be the star. DJ and Karaoke at Owens every Thursday.

Friday, December 27, 2024

  • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Canasta (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group playing “Hand & Foot”. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Hanukkah Community Outdoor Lighting & Dinner (5:30 pm) @ Congregation B’nai Shalom, Westborough: Outdoor Hanukkah menorah lighting with songs and blessings, followed by an indoor dinner, then a Shabbat Service. The lighting is open to the public. The dinner requires registration. For details, see event page.

  • Author Visit with Susan Lubner (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library, main floor: The children’s author will read from her new book, followed by a crafts and hot chocolate. For details, see dedicated post.

Sunday, December 29, 2024

  • Hanukkah at Apex (5:00 pm) @ Apex Entertainment Center, Marlborough: The public is invited to a community party organized by Central Mass Chabad. For details, see Facebook event. To register, click here. (I’m sharing the local event since we don’t have a synagogue in Southborough.)
