This winter, the Shifrin family is launching a new fundraiser for ALS research and care — the “Shifstrong Hockey Tournament 3V3”.
The 3V3 tournament is only open to high school students. But the event will also feature fun for all ages through a free skate and a shootout competition.
As with every “Shifstrong” fundraiser, the event is in honor of late Southborough resident Brian Shifrin* “and all others impacted by ALS”. (This fundraiser is put on by his children Charlie and Courtney Shifrin.)
The event will take place on Sunday, February 23rd at St. Mark’s School’s Gardner Rink.
Full equipment is required to play. And free skaters and shootout contestants must bring their own skates and helmets.
The free skate will run from 11:00 – 11:50 am. (And that will be free after all!)**
The Girls Tournament will start at 11:50 am and Boys at 2:00 pm. (Check-in for each opens 30 minutes prior.) The shootout will start at 4:00 pm.**
Tournament players can take part in the shootout for free. Others can sign up for just that event for $5.
Registering to play in the tournament costs $25 per player.
Current high schoolers can sign up as 3-5 player teams in the tourney. (Only 3 players on the ice at a time, but subs allowed.)
You can also sign up as an individual player or as a Goalie. Depending on the number individual players, they will be organized to form teams and/or be added to other teams as subs. The Goalies won’t be not be assigned to a team, and instead “rotate between their respected division”.
Funds raised will be contributed to ALS ONE.
To register or read more details visit their fundraising event page here. (Just note that the schedule above is more up-to-date than the info on the site.)
*As the event promotions state, Brian Shifrin “was a Southborough dad, husband, son, brother, uncle, coach, selectman, volunteer, friend, and mentor to so many, who lost to ALS in November of 2019 at age 43.”
**Updated (1/14/25 12:35 pm): I originally had an outdated tournament & shootout schedule, plus incorrect info on the free skate, because organizers have had trouble getting their promotional images updated. So I updated the details (and marked up the flyers!)
