Veterans collecting worn American flags

Above: Old flags collected at the cemetery this year will be retired at a ceremony next week

The storms we’ve had of late — not to mention all the ones we had over the winter — do a number on American flags flying throughout town. If you have a torn, faded, worn, or otherwise unserviceable flag you want to retire, here’s what to do.

If you have a Transfer Station sticker, you can drop your flag off in the designated collection box located next to the control station at the Transfer Station. If you don’t, contact VFW Commander Steve Whynot (sk1_whynot@hotmail.com) to make other arrangements.

Every year on or about Flag Day, Veterans of VFW Post 3276 and Legion Post 161 hold a flag retirement ceremony in the Rural Cemetery. During the ceremony, flags collected from residents, as well as the ones replaced on Memorial Day, will be retired by ritual burning.

This year’s Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on Monday, June 14 at 6:00 pm at the Rural Cemetery.
