A My Southborough reader noticed crews tearing up a bit of Common Street between the library and the All Wars Memorial yesterday and wondered what was going on. I asked DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan, and here’s what she said:
The work on Common Street is for some water system improvements. Back at the 2008 Annual Town Meeting we had an article for water system improvements which included replacing the pressure relief valves (PRVs), implementing a new control system, and then upgrades to the Boland Station and some piping improvements. The work on Common Street is to set the control box for the PRV that is in front of the Town Common. The Library Trustees agreed to let the Water Division put the control box next to the Cemetery stone wall. The control box will communicate with the DPW Office and then communicate with the PRV to open or close. The control system isn’t in place yet, but upgrading the PRVs and readying them for the new control system is part of the PRV project.
