Southborough Police last night closed a 1-mile stretch of Route 85 after “brick-sized” pieces of concrete fell from the Mass Pike overpass onto the roadway, reports the Metrowest Daily News. The report says no one saw the concrete fall, and no one was injured.
MassDOT was called in, and engineers chipped away loose sections of concrete. You might remember MassDOT completed restoration work on the bridge earlier this year.
Update 10:24 am: Here’s additional coverage from local media:
- Chunks of concrete fall from Mass. Pike overpass (Boston Herald)
- Concrete chunks fall from Pike bridge in Southboro (Channel 7 news)
- Falling ‘Pike Concrete Forces Road Closure (Channel 5 news)
I’m so glad MassDOT did such a good job with the rennovation and repair work earlier this year that chunks of concrete are now falling off of the underpass where they could injure or kill drivers or pedestrians or at minimum, damage people’s cars.
Unbelievable.
