A couple dozen people showed up at the Garfield House for this afternoon’s scheduled auction, but none of them came to bid.
According to the terms and conditions of the auction, anyone wanting to bid on the property had to come with a $50K cashiers check. Auctioneer Louis Fischer told the waiting crowd that no one did, so there would be no live auction.
Instead, Fischer said they would move to a sealed-bid auction in which written bids can be submitted. “The property is still available, and the estate is still very desirous to sell,” Fischer said. “We’re hopeful, and anticipate that we will find a high bidder.”
Many of the people at today’s auction were friends and acquaintances of the Garfield family, along with members of the real estate community.
Written offers on the property will be accepted until close of business on November 19. Bids may be mailed to Steven Greenberg of RE/MAX Oak Realty (www.oakrealtyonline.com).
“This is not a bad thing, this is a good thing,” Fischer said. “People now have a bit more time to sharpen their pencils.”
Wow it is pretty surprising that nobody put even a low ball bid in on the property.
