Which Southborough roads will be paved this year – here’s the list

Above: A newly paved Sears Road

You might have noticed the Southborough DPW crews out and about around town lately wrapping up some road maintenance before the (real) cold weather hits. In addition to patch jobs and other work, the DPW has plans to repave a number of roads this year.

Some, like Sears Road, have already been done. Others will happen next spring. DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan sent along a list of roads that will be paved within the fiscal year.

Fall

  • Waveney Road
  • Deerfoot Extension
  • Sears Road

Spring

  • Southville Road (local piece)
  • Woodland Road (Richards to Route 85)
  • Oak Hill Road
  • Maple Street
  • Central Street
  • Learned Street
  • Grove Street
  • Northboro Road (Town Line to 495)
  • Parkerville Road (Route 9 to Wildwood)

Wondering why a certain road didn’t make the cut? I asked Galligan how they prioritize the maintenance work, and here’s what she had to say:

The street paving contract list is based on several items: road condition, whether it is a through road or a dead end road, what work needs to be done (road, sidewalks, curbing, drainage), how we are funding the work (chapter 90 and warrant articles) and whether there is construction currently on the road or confidently planned to start on the road.

What do you think of the list? Does it include the roads you care about? Share your thoughts in the comments.

I wish they would get to Woodland Road this fall. I commute to the train station by bike and that section of road is dangerous.

Any idea what “local piece” of southville road means?

Part of Southville Road east of Route 85 is owned by the state. They maintain their section (and it has never made any sense to me). It also goes for Main Street, and I believe Boston Road.

I guess Main street (especially right in the center of town) has to wait for the “beautification” project of downtown…..which begins when??? The center of town couldn’t look any more uninviting, with crappy roads, sidewalks and, the thorn in my side, the corner lot.

Main Street is a State road. There is a State project in the works to upgrade it including many of the deficiencies you site. I believe it is supposed to start in the next year or two. The corner lot is, however, private property.

yes, I know who owns it and I know that there are issues with the ability to develop the land. I always like to chime in about it though!

Years ago the town had been planning a major reconstruction of the section of Parkerville that is now scheduled to be paved next spring. I recall there being the need to re-do the sub base and base layers in addition to the surface paving, as the road had never been constructed to town specifications. There had also been plans to install a sidewalk from Route 9 south to Mary Finn school. Are any of these improvements to be part of the scope next spring?

What’s “Deerfoot extension”? Is that the bit south of Route 9?

Yes….from Route 9 eastbound south to the cul de sac

Any idea when the rest of Parkerville Road: Wildwood to Southville Road, including the small piece across from Southville Road to the train gate will get done? We’ve lived here for 15 years and have never had any work done on the road. Infact, we had to fight to get our piece plowed several years ago.
