They fought hard, but the Algonquin girls field hockey team lost to Andover in the state championships on Saturday morning by a score of 3-1.
Here’s what coach Dan Welty told TheDailyNorthborough.com after the game:
“These girls took out Shrewsbury, Westborough, Quabbin, South Hadley, big wins for our program against powerhouse teams in the state…We were playing to win the whole thing, but if you think about the success of this team: the first Central Mass. championship in the programs 50 year history and the first time in the state finals…We felt really good about the season we’ve had.”
Congrats to the girls on a remarkable season. Without question it was one to be proud of.

The team played hard, and they took the loss well (read the Metrowest Daily News article). Congrats to the the team and coaches for a great season. They’re only losing three starters, so hopefully, they’ll have another run at it next year.
And thanks to all the fans who came out Saturday, the team truly appreciated the support.
