For more than ten years, Fay School has played host to a Special Olympics basketball tournament, and this year is no exception. On Saturday the school will welcome athletes and volunteers for one memorable day.
“There are a lot of teachable moments,” (Fay Director of Athletics Kim Chorosiewski,) said. “By the end of the day, the kids get it. The Olympians teach the spectators to be involved in a way that is unexpected….it’s impossible to walk away unaffected. When they see a boy or girl get a basket, they all cheer….even the other team cheers. It shows that you can be competitive and caring.”
In addition to Fay School volunteers, the greater Southborough community also participates – local residents, and this year, a local Girl Scout Troop are helping out. This is a testament to the impact the event has, and many volunteers return, even students who have graduated.

I remember the first year Fay hosted this event and having our girls there to volunteer. It was such a positive and rewarding experience that they looked forward to volunteering at it for many years.
For the athletes and their families, from Southborough and all over Massachusetts, the joy, pride, spirited athletic competition, and sense of accomplishment on this day is inspiring. It brings so many people together in such a wonderful way. A great tradition and public service, that I am glad to hear is still ongoing!
