Time for another open thread. For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Here’s a question for those in the know. Due to the ghastly winter, many town roads are in need of a good repaving. But due to the budget crunch, I imagine some tough decisions need to be made.
Is there any way to know now which town roads are due for repaving in calendar 2011? Specifically, I wonder about Parkerville Rd south of 9 and Woodland Road near the intersection of Richards Rd.
Good question! Look for a post about this later today.
Speaking as a resident of Middle Road, trying to make a turn onto Main Street can be dangerous when there are several cars parked on the side of Main Street. You can not always see vehicles approaching from the left, and those vehicles rarely slow down.
Is there any reason the DPW can’t put one of those convex mirrors on the opposite pole?
I’m sure we’re not the only ones who have had some close calls there.
I asked DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan about this last night. She said the Mass DOT discourages the use of convex mirrors because they distort the image and studies show they’re not that effective.
The good news is Galligan said the intersection of Middle Road and Main Street will be redesigned as part of the Main Street reconstruction project. The bad news is the design for that project hasn’t yet been approved, so it’s not likely to get underway until 2014 at the earliest.
Another turn question. The Sears Rd intersection w/ Rte. 30 is problematic. Heading East, I see there’s a sign that tries to tell you how to get around the island if you’re taking a left onto Sears. But I constantly get dirty looks if say, I’m on Sears Rd taking a left onto Main St and am left of the island, and a car barreling West bound to take a right onto Sears Rd thinks I’m on the wrong side. Or, coming down Sears Rd to take that left onto Main East, the car in front of me goes to the right of the island, to take a left, and then is flipping me off ‘cuz they think I’m in the wrong. This despite the other sign that tries to indicate traffic goes both ways.
Why can’t that little island be eliminated?
It defies explanation, but I have a special place in my heart for that little island. DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan says I’m in the minority, however.
Sounds like she’d like to see it go away, too, and it likely will as part of the the Main Street reconstruction project. But if you read my reply to Marge above, you know that project isn’t going to start any time soon.
Guess you’re going to have to get used to those dirty looks for now.
Chris, flipping you off is horrendous. 1/2 the time i forget and take a left from the right and am like, “oh well” and make the best of it. i am not sure why the island is still there–i sort of just wing it like most people.
just smile and wave :)
or do i take a right from the left? whatever. have yet to get in an accident!
