Southborough police communications officer Joseph Bennett, who served on the force for more than thirty years, died yesterday after a battle with cancer. Selectman Bill Boland announced Bennett’s passing at a pre-Town Meeting last night. Bennett was 68 years old.
A longtime Southborough resident who most recently resided in Humarock, Bennett started with the police force as a reserve officer in the 1970’s. He was later hired as a full-time communications officer, a position he held until his retirement in 2007.
“He personified a love of life. He made the most of every moment,” Police Chief Jane Moran said. “He was a great asset to the department and the town, and he will be missed.”
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main St. Southborough (morrisfuneralparlor.com). A funeral will take place at St. Matthew Church on Saturday at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in the Rural Cemetery.
A good man, wise beyond his years.
A wonderful and kind man, who made the world a better place.
Joe was one of those people you are a better person for knowing, and you could always count on him to put a smile on your face.
My condolences to the Bennett family.
Deepest condolences to the Bennett Family, Joe was a wonderful man who will truly be missed by all that knew him and whose lives were touched by him. Joe did alot of wonderful deeds that others will never know about behind the scene. He will be greatly missed.
He was truly a nice man and represented police officers in the best possible way. Deepest sympathies to his family
My sincere condolences to all members of the Bennett Family.
I am sure Joe will be missed soooo much. I was lucky to have known him, he was a great person and I hope he is now in a very peaceful place.
This is indeed sad news….what a wonderful man he was. He was never afraid to listen and find an answer for you….and then have a long discussion about life in general! He will be so missed by all. Godspeed, Officer Joe, the gates are open and the angels are waiting for you.
First, my condolences to Joe’s family. His family was first in his book. Second, I first met Joe when I was a teenager pumping gas at Cookman’s and Joe was wearing a red and white striped shirt, slinging subs at Lugia’s across the street. Then when he was a communications officer at Southborough Police Department, I was next door on the fire department. Joe always told us where to go.
Joe always had a smile, was always pleasant, had a great sense of humor, and always asked: “Hey, how ya doin’ ?” He was another one of those folks you never forget. He will certainly be missed.
Joe was great man and a great Police Officer. I was lucky to have known him. Godspeed Joe. My condolences to his family and to all the members of SPD
