School committee to vote on teacher contract on Thursday

The Southborough (K-8) School Committee will meet tomorrow to vote on a new 3-year contract for teachers.

Few details have been released about the contract, which was ratified last week by the teachers union. Superintendent Charles Gobron said earlier this week that as part of the contract, teachers agreed to increase their health insurance contribution from 20 to 25 percent to match that of municipal employees. He said in return teachers would receive a “small cost of living increase” over the next three years.

Contracts for police, fire, and DPW were ratified by the Board of Selectmen late last week and were approved by Town Meeting on Monday. The contracts, which are retroactive to this year, all call for no salary increase this year, with pay increases totaling 1.5 to 2.5 percent over the subsequent two years of the contract.

Selectman Bill Boland told Town Meeting voters that the municipal unions also agreed to “appropriate give-backs” that will help lower the town’s unfunded liability.

As is standard practice, Town Meeting does not get to vote on the teacher contract.

The school committee meets on Thursday at 5:45 pm in the Trottier library. You can see the agenda here.
