The severe storms that passed through the state yesterday spared Southborough for the most part. The same could not be said for Springfield, and last night Southborough sent a crew to the city to help with the emergency response.
Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency yesterday as tornadoes touched down across the state. The severe weather caused damage in a number of communities in Western and Central Massachusetts, with the hardest hit being Springfield and the nearby town of Monson. At least four people were killed.
Patrick last night mobilized the National Guard as communities across the state sent workers to the hardest hit areas.
Mauro said one of Southborough’s fire engines along with four emergency personnel headed to Springfield as part of a statewide mutual aid call. In addition to Southborough, the towns of Northborough, Westborough, Marlborough, Hopkinton, Ashland, and Framingham all responded to the call for aid, sending a total of 6 fire engines and 2 ladder trucks.
As of last night Mauro did not know how long the Southborough crew will be in Springfield or what exactly they’ll be doing. “They’ll get their assignment when they get there,” he said.
