The state attorney general’s office has a second time declined to investigate charges filed by resident Nancy Vargas late last year alleging Southborough violated the state’s Open Meeting Law. While the state said they wouldn’t investigate because the complaint was filed too late, they did express concern over the charges.
“Although we decline to investigate this complaint, we are concerned by the nature of the allegations, and we take this opportunity to remind the town of Southborough of its obligations under the Open Meeting Law,” Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Sclarsic wrote.
Sclarsic acknowledged that the town updated its committee handbook after the complaint was first filed but suggested more could be done.
“Given the nature of the allegations, we encourage the board to take more active steps to ensure that members of public bodies in Southborough are trained and educated on the Open Meeting Law and are in fact complying with the law,” he wrote.
