I hate to be the one to say this, but school starts in just 22 days. If you haven’t made it to the beach yet this summer, you have precious few days left. Why not make the most of it by heading off to the best beaches out there?
So, Southborough beach-goers, where do you like to go when you’re in need of some sun, sand, and waves? Let’s limit the suggestions to beaches that can be reached by car for a day trip or weekend.
Head to the comments section below to share which beaches are your favorites and what you love about them.
Hampton Beach is the absolute favorite for the kids. The beach is spectacular, and the boardwalk is really honkytonk, but FUN for the kids. Great arcades, gift shops, candy shops and restaurants. The waters a bit cold, but the kids don’t care.
After years of going to Gloucester and other beaches up that way, we now go down to Scarborough Beach in Rhode Island. Only about 10-15 mins further, much cheaper parking, and, most important for the kids, they allow boogie boards in the water (unlike Mass). Oddly tho’, in RI you can’t toss a ball on the beach, while in Mass you can. But our kids prefer being able to boogie board, w/ some great waves, BTW.
Nice clean bathrooms & showers, too. Lots of places in Narragansett to eat on the way home, or Providence is also good.
Good suggestions. I’d love to see more. We go to the Cape once a year and sadly, that’s the only time I get to the beach – because the only other beaches I know of and love are up in Gloucester and it’s so expensive to park there. I worry we’d pack everything, make the trek, park, and an hour later my 2yo would decide she’s had enough. ;-)
We are very fond of the North Shore beaches Crains, Wingersheek, and Singing. Go late in the day and parking is not too much of a hassle.
Singing beach is not private?
Horseneck Beach is great!!! Lots of room with 2 miles of beach, great place to go birding due to the estuary habitat there, clean bathroom/changing rooms and a snack bar. Since it is a state beach, it is very inexpensive, $7.00 for the day for parking, which is plentiful. We go early in the day to get the best spot on the sand, say to get there by 10am…it is on the western end of Buzzards Bay In Westport, MA and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get there.
Just wondering if the State Park pass available through the Recreation Department could be used for the parking at Horseneck. Does anybody go to Hopkinton State Park any more? I haven’t been to the beach in years. Love the water, hate the sand. I guess you can’t get one without the other :)
The State Park pass, which is $35 for in state residents to purchase, works at Hopkinton (usually $5.00) and at Horseneck ($7.00). The pass from the Rec Dept is this same pass. If you are going to Hopkinton more than 7 times or to Horseneck more than 5, it is worth the purchase. The pass will also get you into Cochitutate in Natick, Walden Pond in Concord and the State Park in Rutland (which I have not yet been to). I love Horseneck, but my favorite is still Wingersheak (which I believe is now $20 weekdays and 25 weekends, unless it went up again this year).
Hampton Beach is always a favorite of my kids between the great waves and the boardwalk they have a blast.
Cahoon Hollow/Beach Comber in Wellfleet has some of the best scenery on all of Cape Cod. Spend the day at the beach and then late afternoon at the Beach Comber! I will admit I am partial to the place – met my beautiful wife there,…. We now go back every year with our kids, the place is a classic!
We were there this past weekend, and aside from some overtipsy patrons of the Beachcomber and renegade seaweed, had a total blast. We also love South Beach in Chatham, though there’s a danger of getting eaten if you swim. ;-)
