MWDN: Southborough library to restructure space for teens

The Southborough Public Library was one of just seven Massachusetts libraries recently awarded a Serving Tweens and Teens grant. They plan to use the nearly $14K to reconfigure space for an age group they say has gone underserved.

Reports the Metrowest Daily News:

“We have story times, toddler times and music times. There are book groups, our genealogy club and crafts nights for adults, but what do the teens come to the library for?” [Library Director Jane Cain] said.

Cain said that she, [volunteer Nancy Mayo] and librarian Naomi Magnoni met with a group of teens last fall before applying for the grant to learn more about what kind of programs teens want.

So the library started a teen advisory group that she said has been coming up with ideas, from homework help sessions to video game nights.

“It was interesting to see that this group of teens wants to do something for each other and the community,” she said. “They’re great kids.”

Cain said they’ll use the money to create a Teen Zone in the back of the main floor, and to purchase video game systems for social events.
