What to do in Southborough this weekend

Trick or treating on Saturday isn’t the only fun event going on in Southborough this weekend. Saturday, in particular, is chock full of options. Here’s everything I know about. If I’ve missed an event, shout it out in the comments.

Friday, November 4

A reading by Southborough author Steve Ulfelder
Pilgrim Church, 7:00 pm
Southborough author Steve Ulfelder will read from and discuss his debut mystery novel, Purgatory Chasm. The wide-ranging, interactive event will cover Ulfelder’s path to publication, where he gets his ideas, the creative process, and the tumultuous state of the publishing industry. It’s an evening for readers and writers, whether you’ve read Purgatory Chasm or not. Steve will also offer a preview of his follow-up novel, The Whole Lie, which comes out next May. Refreshments will be provided.

Algonquin girls volleyball division playoffs
Algonquin Regional High School, 7:00 pm
The sixth-seed Algonquin girls volleyball team takes on 11th-ranked Concord-Carlisle in the first round of the Division 1 Central-West playoffs.

Saturday, November 5

ARHS Ski Team Ski Sale
St. Anne Church, 29 Boston Road, 9:00 am – 2:30 pm
The Algonquin Ski Team will hold its annual sale, offering great bargains on ski and snowboard equipment and clothing. Cash or check only.

Halloween fun at the Library
Southborough Public Library, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Stop by the library for Halloween crafts, games, and trick-or-treating in the Children’s Room. Kids are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes.

Town-wide flu clinic
Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Road, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
The Board of Health will hold a flu clinic open to all residents ages 12 and older on Saturday at the Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Road. The clinic runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. An appointment is not needed, but you’ll need to bring your insurance card. Please wear a shirt with short sleeves.

Algonquin girls field hockey quarterfinals
Algonquin Regional High School, 2:30 pm
The second-seed Algonquin girls field hockey team will face off in the Division 1 Central quarterfinal match against either Worcester South or Leominster.

Grand opening of South Union School Playground
21 Highland Street, 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Come to the new South Union Playground  to celebrate its grand opening. In addition to the playground itself, kids will enjoy face painting, a magician, and more. There will also be snacks and drinks. (The ceremony was originally scheduled for last Sunday, but was postponed because of snow.)

Family Farm Day at Breakneck Hill Conservation Land
Community Garden, Breackneck Hill Conservation Land, 4:00 pm
Meet the cows (including Henry, the new Milking Devon calf), take a family hike, enjoy some refreshments, and then watch a rousing game of cowpie bingo. Buy a square for $20, and if the cow does his business on your square, you’ll win $200. Proceeds will help buy the hay the cows need to make it through the winter. Sunday, November 6

Southborough Historical Museum
25 Common Street, 1:00 – 4:00 pm
The Southborough Historical Museum will be open specials hours on Sunday during the month of November. The museum houses treasures from Southborough’s past, including artifacts of our rural heritage and a fascinating display about the Burnett Apothecary. The museum is located at 25 Common Street in the historic Flagg School just behind Pilgrim Church.
