Time for another open thread. For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Anyone know whats going on to the Rt. 9 side of the old HighSpeed building? Noticed some dozers and dump trucks sitting there.
What happened to the 15 minute parking at the transfer station? For several weeks I have been asked to sign things, but raffle tickets and so on. Out of curiosity I would drive through again later in the day and see the same cars still parked in the same spots. Can’t the dump just be the dump?
People like this town because the kids can get involved in lots of extra curricular activities; which cost money; which is why they hit the townspeople up at the dump; I do agree they shouldn’t take up the parking spaces for too long but really, you can’t blame these organizations for going where the volume is for $. We don’t have a Stop & Shop to use.
I agree Minimom. It’s mostly kids trying to earn money for their troops (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts) by selling raffle tickets, pancake breakfast tickets, Girl Scout Cookies, etc. They are all involved in activities and community service projects that keep them actively social with their peers and off the computer and video games. Most of the activities they do are self funded….they have to EARN it.
It’s all positive!
If you don’t want to buy anything just smile and say “no thank you”.
Just got the school schedule for next year and I see we are starting on the Thursday before Labor Day. Is there anyone interested in starting on the Tuesday after Labor Day?
With the early school start and summer camps and other activities it seems there isn’t any time left for the family to have a week to themselves anymore.
Remember when we needed that weekend to bring in the harvest or some other such family oriented fun? Yup, neither do I…
Seriously though, would it be that hard to start Tuesday?
It would be that hard….in June when everyone in town is complaining about getting out as late as the 27th. Unless we go down that road again of trying to just have a March vacation.
I agree. There is no reason to start with a 2 day week before a 3 day weekend. Silly. I’d rather be in school longer in June. or, yes, cut out one of ne spring vacations and let people have a full summer.
School starts on the 29th which is a Wednesday as it always has. If you have a kindergartener you have orientation that day and then start the next day. Otherwise it is Wednesday not Thursday as stated.
It hasn’t “always” started on the 29th of August. As far as I recall, September is the standard start of school, not August. Labor day weekend was summer’s last hooray and school started right after. Wish we could to back to that. Who needs vacation in both feb and April? Or, make on vacation a long weekend instead.
The last week in August should be a “professional development” week for the teachers. That would eliminate the need for the three additional development days that are sprinkled randomly throughout the year and the kids could start school on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Two problems solved.
I believe that the school year got lengthened a few years ago when Mass instituted uniform instructional minimums. These require a minimum of 180 days of instruction and a minimum of 900 hours spent in core academic instructions.
When you add in expected snow days and school holidays you end up with “summer compression”
Can someone provide an update on the Northborough/Southborough Algonquin reimbursement issue? It’s been a long while since I’ve read anything…and it’s approximately a $1.5 million dollar dispute, which isn’t chump change….
Mark,
Good question. Shouldn’t the SC be perusing the answer and resolution?
Arren’t we entitled to an update from someone?
I have a feeling that when the legal fees equal Southborough’s portion of the $1.5 million the issue will have resolved itself.
Can anyone recommend a good consignment store in the area for woman’s clothing and furniture? One that donates the items if they do not sell would be great too! Thank you.
St. Mark’s Bargain Box is great but is only opened limited time during 2 seasons. They only do clothing (for everyone) not furniture.
Just checked the schedule. The Bargain Box will start accepting donations and consignments this year on March 20. The shop opens to the public on March 29. You can read more here: http://www.stmarkssouthborough.org/serve/Organizations/Bargin-Box.html
As much as I like the songs and signs of Spring there is always one I could do without right through Thankgiving, those pesky little Harley’s riding around making more noise than a tank. I can only partial give you the “noise for safety” argument but you loose it all when you’ve got to rev that unmuffled engine around every corner or accelerate with the noise and speed of a jet from every stop.
I’m all for freedom of expression but not at the expense or sanity of those neighborhoods you have to harass on your way through.
Speeding cars are getting worse on General Henry Knox in the morning. I’m going to start calling police with license plate numbers
