Last month came word that the venerable Friends of the Southborough Library organization is in danger of folding due to lack of membership. The group reports that after years of service, most of its active members have retired or plan to do so. That means they need new blood to keep going.
The Friends of the Southborough Library is mainly a fundraising organization charged with helping the library meet the changing needs of the community. One of its annual challenges is raising approximately $4,000 to pay for museum passes for library patrons. They also assist with funding programs that encourage literacy for children and young adults, not to mention a host of smaller purchases like the sign in front of the library that advertises special events, access to a genealogy website, and additional seating for families to read in the children’s room.
On Wednesday the Friends will hold their monthly meeting at the Library. The meeting will include election of officers for the upcoming year. It’s open to the public, and the Friends encourage anyone who wants to help support the library and its future programming to attend. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm at the Southborough Library.
If you can’t attend the meeting but you’re interested in volunteering or learning more, contact Library Director Jane Cain at 508-485-5031 or jcain@southboroughma.com.
