Register for the senior tax work-off program starting Friday

Some hours helping out with town projects could earn seniors a break on their property taxes.

The senior tax work-off program sets up qualified seniors with work projects in town departments to earn up to $750 of their property taxes. Seniors must be age 60 or older and be willing to commit to 112 hours of service for the year.

Registration for the program begins tomorrow. There are about 30 spots that are filled on a first-come, first-served basis with priority going to seniors with a household income of less than $45,000.

Senior Center director Pam LeFrancois recently told the Boston Globe that she expects to the program to fill up quickly this year.

LeFrancois said the town has been able to accommodate all seniors who wanted to work in the past, but she has received more inquiries about the program than usual this year, and she thinks the poor economy may drive more people to try to sign up.

Southborough’s tax rate this year is the highest in nearly a decade.

Applications and an info booklet are available at the Senior Center. Applications will be accepted starting at 8:30 am on Friday, April 3.
