Most Southborough residents are getting back into their routines today. Schools are open, most roads are open, and power is back to many who had been without. For others, the power waiting game continues, and may for several more days.
According to National Grid, 552 customers in Southborough are still without power, although that number may be a bit high. For example, I have reports that power is back on Clifford Road, but they still show up on the outage map. Residents have confirmed there is still no power on Valley Road, Clemmons and Nichols Streets, and portions of Main Street.
Most of those areas still without power have been given an estimated time of restoration as the end of day Friday.
As of late last night, two Southborough schools, Finn and Neary, were reportedly still without full power. Superintendent Charles Gobron said he was hopeful National Grid would be able to restore service overnight. That’s exactly what happened, and all four K-8 school in Southborough opened as planned this morning. Algonquin also resumed operations today.
Southborough officials report most roads that had been blocked yesterday are now open, including the major commuting route that is Framingham Road. Willow Street, Mouton Road, and Deerfoot near Clifford are also now open.
While most roads are passable, officials asked residents to use caution while driving and walking around town today, saying roads will be narrower than normal with debris along the sides.
They also warned residents to be alert for wires. “Although most roads will be passable there are still trees leaning on some wires that may come down at a later time,” officials wrote on Twitter.
I’m still waiting to hear if the Town House and other town offices will be open today. The Town House has been on limited power since Hurricane Sandy on Monday and did not reopen on Tuesday. The Southborough Library was open yesterday and will be again today.
Any news on trick or treating? Seems a little insensitive to go on with it as planned when there are those in town still without power. Also, our street and driveways are a mess with wet slippery leaves and downed branches everywhere. This will be even more dangerous tonight for the kids since our street has no street lights.
Officials announced yesterday that trick-or-treating will go on as planned: https://mysouthborough.com/2012/10/30/rooney-national-grid-understaffed-for-storm-response-halloween-will-not-be-canceled/
I have to agree. Dark streets, wet leaves, broken branches and possible downed wires. Sounds like a recipie for disaster to me.
