The year in review

Breakneck Hill Farm, Southborough MA
A fall day on Breakneck Hill conservation land. One of my favorite Southborough images from 2008.

When I started this blog a few months ago, I have to admit I wondered if there would be enough Southborough-specific news to sustain it. Turns out I needn’t have worried.

Here’s a look at some of the big stories that played out in Southborough this year in (very) rough chronological order.

  • Algonquin was temporarily evacuated due to a bomb scare.
  • 85% of registered Southborough voters had their say in the 2008 Presidential election.
  • Gas prices went up and then they went down. Property taxes went up, and stayed there.
  • Southborough’s much-respected police chief William Webber passed away after a battle with cancer.
  • Fay School built and built and built. New dorms went in along Main Street and a plan to build a new primary school on Middle Road was approved.
  • After two years of back-and-forth, including a trip to land court, the Southborough Planning Board approved EMC’s plan to build a 10-building complex on 445 acres on the Southborough-Westborough border. Meanwhile, Woodland Meadows, a proposed 40-unit condo complex off Woodland Road has been held up due to conservation concerns.

What stories did I miss? What will you remember most about 2008? Share your thoughts in the comments.
