Southborough Youth and Family Services is looking for a couple of volunteers to join its board to support its mission of providing mental health and socials services to the residents of Southborough. Here’s more information about the volunteer opportunity and the role SYFS plays in town.
The Southborough Youth Commission Board is looking for a few new members! The Board oversees and supports the work of Southborough Youth and Family Services, a department of the Town of Southborough which provides vital mental health and social service support to residents of the town. Among our services are: counseling, in-school groups, parenting support, holiday giving program, campership program, emergency fund, middle school Teen Centers, and more.
The Board generally meets on the first Tuesday of every month from September through June, at 7:15 PM. Meetings usually last 1 to 1 ½ hours. The Director of SYFS makes a report to the Board at each meeting about the current activities of the department, and any issues facing the department. The Board makes recommendations regarding decisions about programming, budget, etc., and approves the budget each year before it is submitted to the Town.
In addition, Board members are helpful to the department, if they are available and wish to be involved, by helping on Heritage Day or at the annual Halloween party, accompanying the Director to budget meetings with the Selectmen or Advisory Committee, and/or lending a hand to fundraising activities of Friends of the Southborough Youth Commission.
If you are interested in volunteering, or have questions, please feel free to call Laurie Sugarman-Whittier at 508 481-5676, ext. 3, or email her at lsugarmanwhittier@southboroughma.com . Or you can speak with any of the current or recent Board members: Dr. Robert Basow, Haley Distefano, Debbie Hart, Donna Freeman, Karen Gadbois or Sara Evans.
The Friends of the Southborough Youth Commission, are also seeking interested people to be involved in planning and/or helping with fundraising activities to help support Southborough Youth and Family Services. Past fundraising activities have included Spring Shopping Nights, a Bunco night, a family movie night, and an ice-skating party. New ideas are VERY welcome! Friends is a private non-profit organization which uses it funds to support the work of the town department and to provide assistance to families which is not covered by the Town budget and policy, such as camperships to needy children, funds for heating oil or food to needy families and Christmas gifts to children who otherwise would not receive any presents. Youth and Family Services is unable to provide these kinds of services
without the support of Friends. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Laurie Sugarman-Whittier at 508-481-5676, ext. 3, or email her at lsugarmanwhittier@southboroughma.com, or call or email Kathy Cook at 508 787-1000 or kcook@fusiongroupinc.com.
