Southborough cyclist seriously injured in crash on Saturday

Southborough resident John Kutch, 52, suffered serious upper body injuries when his bicycle was struck by a car on Main Street on Saturday. Reports the Metrowest Daily News:

Kutch was biking eastbound on Main Street approaching Middle Road when he was hit by a 2007 Pontiac sedan taking a left turn onto Middle Road, James said.

Kutch hit the front of the car and was thrown onto the windshield before landing on the ground, James said. He was wearing a helmet, James said.

The car was driven by 25-year-old Southborough man, James said. The man did not show any signs of being impaired, he said.

Police are investigating, but no charges have been filed against the driver at this time. As of yesterday afternoon, Kutch was still in the hospital, but there was no word on his condition. Read more in this article by the MWDN.

Scary. I hope Mr. Kutch makes a full and speedy recovery. I can’t help but wonder if terrible condition of the road had anything to do with the accident.

I agree, the road is terrible for cyclist. I for one have to travel further in to avoid the many potholes and large cracks. I can’t wait till the road is redone in 3-4 years (I belive this was mentioned a few weeks back). Maybe the sidewalks will be for people instead of cars (yes, another pet peeve of mine).

Mr Kutch, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I drove by on Saturday, and even though those involved in the accident were no longer in the area, the sight of a bicycle lying on the road in front of a car surrounded by police officers left a knot in my stomach. Best wishes to Mr. Kutch for a full recovery.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Kutch and his family.

This was a left-cross wreck, a mode of wreck that is 100% the responsibility of the driver of the turning vehicle to not violate the right of way of the vehicle proceeding straight through the intersection. Unless there was something blocking the driver’s view of oncoming traffic like a tree or something growing in the middle of the street there is nothing that can mitigate in favor of the driver.

Why hasn’t the drive been named? This isn’t a case of a minor, the person was 25.
