Am I the only one who thinks this is a bit too much? Soccer and t-ball for 3-6 year olds? If you have to say “needs to be potty trained” as a prerequisite for a “sport” than perhaps they are too young. Let little ones be little ones. Let them explore, create, run, play tag, duck, duck goose and play in a sand box. What’s the rush?

I think if you went and saw the sports that the youngest are playing, you wouldn’t be as worried. It’s not really comparable to what a lot of people think of as organized sports. It’s a bunch of little kids running around together, with some very loose structure based on the particular sport. Sure, the theme is the given sport (soccer, t-ball, whatever) but the end result is mostly just a group of kids getting together to play with guidance from helpful volunteers. And the town sports we’ve had our kids sign up for at early ages involve one single practice a week, usually about an hour. So it doesn’t take any significant time away from more open ended activities that kids normally enjoy.

Here, here. Take your kids to the playground. It’s free and they will have the best time. Most of them could care less what they are playing as long as they are having fun. Why the structure at such an early age?

Man, I complainer, but I think I’ve met my match with you guys. Some of the sports stuff has gotten a bit out of control, but I think you are reading a bit too much into this, this IS about letting the little ones be little ones. The kids love it, they get to run around, be with their friends and get to be like their big siblings. The parents get to meet other parents developing community relationships and forces the parents to get the kids out when otherwise they’d probably be watching TV. If you actually click the recdesk link you will see that some of the other equivalent programs ARE to play tag, duck duck goose etc. I think its great we live in a community where there is actually a demand for these activities because enough of the population wants to get their kids out of the house to be active.
