Living in the area of the recent Parkerville Rd house B&E’s I am very disappointed in the Southborough police. To find out there have been local break ins days after they have happened when I live close by is very frustrating and gives no one in the area a heads up to be on the look out and be more vigilant. I would say it’s a little late for them to be asking for help now. Than god we have reverse 911 and the new code red system has been installed. Nothing feels better than finding out days later our lives could have been in danger.
Alan, It is not the Southborough Police Department – SPD. Our police department can use at least two new full time patrolmen and at least one new fulltime investigator. They are understaffed I believe. Check it out for yourself. Perhaps you can work with them and the BOS to get more resources for our police ( our dispatch system is still run on tubes). Keep in mind please they are the first people you call when there is a problem, especially if like most people you have no way to defend yourself. Stop blaming the police. Blame the resources that are going to schools for ever increases raises and increases in salaries, medical benefits and retirement for the schools and all the towns employees (although the town folk have made some recent consessions but there are many more there to be made as well ie. retirmement, self awarded – automatic pay increases, and 4-9 weeks paid vacation). Until you/we/town/country organize a revolt (ie. Tea Party organization is a good one), and put a stop to it as a group, it will continue. But as I have posted here before, the schools are day care for so many families everywhere now in this town and all towns throughout the country. And the mommies and daddies want all their kiddies to get into the so called best colleges. That is another discussion for later.
Mike, Maybe my point was missed. When the two houses got broken into an hour apart from each other, within a mile apart, that was the time the SPD should have immediate notified us thru the reverse 911 or the new code red system so all the neighbors could have been on the look out. Not three days later. Maybe if we knew we could have spotted suspicious vehicles at the time this was all happening. They used the reverse 911 system for this before, why not this time?
Also, until I stop seeing he cursers sitting on the side of the old Andrea restaurant for hours on end, or Gulbakian’s, the argument they are understaffed goes no where with me. With 80+ miles of road in town there seems to be plenty for them to patrol.
I agree that there seems to be a big imbalance on how each department in town is funded. If the police need our help, asking for it while these things are happening seems to be the thing to do. I can’t help them three days later.
The police may be the first people other people call, but I fail to see why so many defend them when its there job to begin with. I never get praise at my job for lack of results. They wanted to be policeman / policewoman, now do the job. Keep us informed in a timely fashion and I will do everything to help them stop crime. More than happy to keep my eyes and ears pealed and give them a call, I have done it in the past. I was home at the time these two house got broken into and the criminals would have had to pass my house to go from the first break in to the second.
I was told by a police officer friend once that when a cop looks like he is just sitting around in his car for hours, he’s not being lazy. They have a fair amount of paperwork and other administrative tasks to take care of as part of their job. In many cases they will take this work out into the car into the community and do it in a visible fashion.
That way they can get their work done, but also add a visible police presence to the area they are working in. Makes a lot more sense to me than having them stuck at a desk inside the station.
Were the Parkerville break-ins on the North or South side of Rte 9?
The Metrowest Daily News reported “One of the homes is located near George Mooney Park, while the other is nearly a mile down the road near Smith Lane.” So, apparently south side.
I had a question. Is there any remote sensing capabilities available outside of CIA, M16, NSA et.? Google earth is not real time. That may explain how these parasites knew exactly when to go to one of the homes. Literally, the homeowner was gone for one hour, and they went thru the front door with a simple crow bar and popped the door from the ninge. Talk about brazen. They come to the front door and knock. If you answer the door they claim to be lost and take off. That is when you or we need to call the police, look for a car and plate, and if safe watch or follow them form a distance. This information should be put out on the reverse 911 system. Take it as an action item and get it done.
My guess is low-tech surveillance and / or social engineering. Low-tech as in basic visual recon of an area, something that’s been done for many centuries by thieves. For example, if a person at home regular parks his car in the driveway instead of inside the garage, most likely no one is home if the driveway is empty. If this person is routinely at work from 8 – 6, M – F, this becomes a clear pattern to see if you’re a thief driving through neighborhoods. That’s why I ALWAYS park in my car in the garage and never in the driveway if I can help it. Most people are creatures of routine and thieves capitalize on this to their advantage. Thieves can also find out your routines from your neighbors. That’s not to say that your neighbor is actively working with the thieves, but they may inadvertantly let things slip out. You have to ask yourself: how well do you know your neighbors and, just as importantly, how well do you know who they know and who those secondary parties know? It could be friends or yard service or delivery service or anything really. It seems like a twisted version of the Kevin Bacon game, but you’d be surprised how far down the chain information can travel.
@Mike: Southboro Schools are NOT daycare. They are some of the best in the country. You obviously are not spending time in them or know what you are talking about. They meet the needs of children from those who end up getting into Harvard to the most severely disabled. Southborough is a model for other schools. If you want an example of no or low cost government, go to Haiti.
Although a bad choice of words, I think Mike was expressing his frustration with the money that is spent on the school system as the other services in town suffer badly. If I had it my way the Police would have 6 officers on duty on all shifts, the Transfer station would be 100% tax payer funded, the fire dept would have all new equipment and so on. Although the schools are needed and I am more than happy to do my part, having lived in town for 46 years and never using the school system services I can understand his frustration. Our other town services need to be our next focus.
As a member of our society you use our school system services every single day.
Yes! And in purely economic terms, these schools keep your property values high. That’s a fact.
I was speaking with an officer and he said they usually onluy have 2 officers on a shift! He also said that both officers are ususally tied up and dont have the time for proactive work!
2 officers per shift! This has always been a pet peeve of mine but I think I recall hearing or reading that they own 9 vehicles!
Good point on bad choice of words. However so many parents rely on the school system in the schools to watch their kids And raise their kids And the school to become houses for special needs children. We just simply cannot afford it. We played with and partnered with you By our side a very close friend of our family growing up who was had down syndrome just like he was one of ours. I don’t see that anymore it makes me sad.
Additionally you are spot on we need six full-time officers into investigators.
And I agree be careful what your neighbors know.
I believe somebody’s break-ins are done by neighborhood kids or related people.
The ones they caught recently were two Russians And they were probably made to do the break-ins by the Russian mafia operating in the area.
They then take the valuables to the jewelry exchanges in Boston.
One of our friends and neighbors found the jewelry there in Boston.
The detectives will tell you the same thing.
The best deterrent is a good size dog who barks, And a handgun available for use in extreme cases. One family I know keeps a very large very strong fire extinguisher next to the bed Not to throw at a break in person but two spray them off. But there’s no defense like having a handgun or a gun to protect yourself or scare someone off until the police arrive. I am not an advocate of using it unless your life or family is threatened
Additionally Every woman should file for an FID card and get pepper spray to keep in her purse in her vehicle and in Accessible l places in the home In vehicles
nothing like a big can of wasp spray that shoots 20′ to give you a head start!
Also, get a neighborhood email list so you can let neighbors know if something has happened.
