It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?
For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

There was a temporary camera on a tall pole on the lawn of Walgreens pointed at the intersection of Oak Hill Road & Route 9. It was there for a couple days and is now gone. Anyone have any idea what it was for?
There are two cameras on the traffic lights at the intersection, one pointed up Oak Hill Rd & one pointed down Central St. I assume those are for monitoring traffic, but this temporary one was strange.
Just curious…
Thanks for asking Jim,we were curious too!
Anyone know what’s going on at the corner of East Main and Framingham road?
Lots of trees were taken down and a lot of heavy equipment.
New houses
Does anyone know the status of Bridge Street…new bridge, repairs?
According to the update at recent Board of Selectmen meeting, Bridge Street is on the state’s list of about 400 similar bridge repairs needed. Because of the nature of the problems to the “deck”, they are unable to support it with a temporary fix until it is repaired.
The town is working to try to see if they can get the project moved higher up in the queue. They are also trying to get permission from CSX to have emergency vehicles cross the train tracks nearby in case of emergencies.
I heard that CSX is blaming the town for using too much salt and the town is blaming CSX for making the deck so high that they had to use salt so cars could make it up and over and then not slide into traffic.
IF only emergency vehicles then how do you keep others off it? There have been motorcycles going over since it was closed but that is likely to end when it gets colder anyway.
As inconvenient as it has been for some I think the overall safety on Southville has gone up without slow moving large trucks making that turn.
The Emergency Vehicles wouldn’t cross the bridge if that’s what you meant. And obviously, only in emergencies. It was apparently allowed years ago, the last time that the bridge was in disrepair.
Has anyone heard what the town is doing about the peeling street signs and when? Some are practically unreadable. And then there are others that look as good as the day they were posted. Two different vendors?
Susan ran a story last fall. You can read the explanation about the sign conditions here: https://mysouthborough.com/2012/10/17/whats-up-with-the-peeling-street-signs/
I recently asked for an update.
Karen Galligan, Director of DPW, informed me that they have a batch of new signs in. They will begin to place some this fall. I haven’t heard back yet on how many or more specific timeframe.
Well, that’s good news!
With all the disposable cash Karen seems to have for cameras, gates, sheds, landscaping and such you would think the street signs would be a bit higher up on her priority. Maybe she’s waiting for the signs to somehow pay for themselves or for us to pay for them with a “Pay As You Look” policy.
Or we could get the Assabet school kids to build us some new ones.
Those cars parked at the corner of Cherry and Pleasant Street near the Autistic Center are very dangerous. Especially during drop off and pick ups. Cars are still speeding and several almost veered into the parked cars, as they stick out at least a foot off the curve. Shouldn’t they be in a driveway?
Thank you
To all non profit groups in town – I was just at the Transfer Station and the can bin is very full. Good source of funds for those so motivated.
