The Southborough Police Department seem to respond to many false burglary alarms. Can a member of the SPD tell us what the town’s policy is on responding to repeated false alarms? Is there a maximum limit before a fine is assessed or the police will not respond?

There is a bylaw that was voted and approved many years ago that addresses your questions.
Chapter 95: “three (3) false alarms in a twelve month period shall be assessed a penalty of $50.00 for the fourth (4th) false alarm in any twelve month period; and a $100.00 penalty for each subsequent false alarm.”

We respond unless cancelled by the alarm company.

Rick,

There are 10 false burglar alarms listed for the 5 day Police log Oct 31 – Nov 4. If that same pattern holds true for the whole year, then the Police Department is responding to somewhere near 900 false burglar alarms each year. That’s a BIG number.

Any idea on how many homes or businesses have alarms?

Maybe it is time for the Selectmen to take a look at this.

Thank you Rick. Could you give us a rough idea of how often you respond to the same locations? The false alarm seems to be a terrible waste of the Police Department’s time, especially when there have been so many home break-ins lately.
