It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?
For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Any update on the Garfield property? Haven’t seen anything in a long time, but recently noticed a ‘porta pottie’ out back…
Are there any blight laws in Southborough? I’m talking about the bringing down of a neighborhood for years on end. I’m not referring to anyone who is working on a fixer-upper. I’m talking about leaving items strewn throughout the yard to rust and decay, discarding them there, rarely mowing the lawn except for a couple times a year, and never removing leaves ever–the things that really don’t cost anything but some effort and pride. People have a right to do what they wish on their own property, but after years and years of this deterioration, it really brings down everyone else in the neighborhood. Unless you live near it, you really can’t understand what it is like to try to keep your yard looking decent, but no matter what you do, this exists. Leaving stuff around to this degree breeds vermin, and we actually had a dead rat in our yard.
Maybe they don’t dump their yard debris on everyone elses property like my neighbor does.
You may try a wellness check. I have a neighbor that looks fine but just cant do the physical work. We try and help, but there is a lot of work having a yard myself. We do bring there trash to the dump weekly.
Why is it when watching the Selectmen’s Meetings on the cable channel, they always cut it off? I would love to see the whole meeting but it is never shown. What is the purpose of showing half of the meeting?
I’m not sure what you are referring to. I watch the BOS meetings recorded by Southborough Access Media. And they always show the entire meeting.
I usually watch it over the computer, not cable. But I have also watched on cable and not had that experience.
It would surprise me to learn that cable is only getting part of that feed. So I wonder if you are misinterpreting one of these moments:
– Before the meeting starts and immediately after they adjourn, audio is muted.
– Sometimes they take a recess mid-meeting. This usually means that an item is scheduled to be discussed at a certain time and they are running ahead of schedule. So they wait to address the topic or open a hearing at the scheduled time. The audio is also cut at that time.
– Sometimes they adjourn to closed Executive Session. That can be in the middle of meeting with open session resuming after. Or they can state right before that they will adjourn the meeting at the end of the exec session.
If it’s something else, please point out which BOS meetings (by date) you are referring to.
Watching the last meeting in which they were discussing the cemetery, Karen Galligan was speaking and mid-sentence the screen went red with a notice on it, then the scrolling of announcements started. John Rooney was talking about not knowing about the layoff, Desiree Aselbekian was there with Lisa Cappello in the front row with the petitions. Sorry I am not sure of the date. I have an antiquated computer at home and it would take me hours to watch it there so I opt for the cable channel.
Well that sounds bizarre. I’m not sure what happened and I don’t know if you mean this is happened more than once. But I just sent your question to Southborough access media. If it’s an ongoing problem, hopefully they’ll fix it. And by the way that was clearly last Tuesday’s BeOS meeting. They should still be rerunning it. So you can check and see if it runs all the way through the next time.
The BOS meeting of 5/13 was, in fact, cutoff on cable–down to one hour fourteen minutes. It was complete at over 2 hours if you watched it via computer. It has since been fixed on cable.
You are both right.
Katelyn Willis of SAM replied to my inquiry:
The total run time for the selectmen meeting was entered incorrectly into our playback system so it did cut off for the first day it was replaying. We have adjusted the time so the meeting is playing the whole way through.
So the next time the meeting plays it will be all the way through. According to the website, that is scheduled to replay:

Has anyone noticed that the turkeys that used to roam Main Street are no longer there? Have they been relocated to a safer spot?
Yes, they have moved on I think, to another part of town where life is less stressful!
Relocation of wild turkey is illegal in the Commonwealth. The most likely reasons you haven’t seen them on the road recently is simply the season. Nesting season starts in April and ends early July – the hens won’t roam as much when they have eggs or poults to protect. Spring also brings a larger and more active predator population, including human predators (wild turkey season began April 28 and ends tomorrow (May 24)). They also could have simply moved somewhere else on their own, or, if the tom died, the hens could have joined another flock.
Anyone hear of when Yama Fuji at Town Center will open?
They are opening Wednesday night (July 23rd) Hope it’s good!!! Sure do miss a Benihana type restaurant with good salad dressing and dipping sauces like Chef Orient used to have :-(
Hi,
The winter moth is now in little pale green caterpillar stage and it is decimating my trees. I am hesitant to spray because I do not want to harm the caterpillars who will turn into butterflies.
If anyone has had success fighting these critters, I’d appreciate the advice. A few years back, I had some success combating gypsy moths using tanglefoot work and double sided tape?
Also, any thoughts on how I can trap the winter moths when they are adults so I have less of these caterpillars in the spring?
Thank you.

Resident at 96 Sears Rd here. The knotweed in our town is really starting to go crazy. I have some in my own yard that is keeping me busy, but it is totally taking over some of the town roads. At this rate someday it will be all we see in the summer. Before its too late, are there any groups or efforts to control this menace ? Im willling to use work volunteer time to do my part to help combat this noxious plant.
