Southborough based company, Sevcon Inc., a producer of electronic equipment, was recently in the news for revealing that it uses conflict materials but argues the materials are necessary for its operations.
The company plans on improving by using ” a continuous improvement strategy in order to improve from the above initial results and to mitigate the risk that our necessary conflict minerals will benefit armed groups.”
The 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, “requires U.S. companies to disclose to the Securities and Exchange Commission by June 2 whether their products contained any gold, tin, tungsten or tantalum sourced from war-torn parts of Congo or adjoining countries — including the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and Angola. The provision aims to choke off funding to armed militia groups responsible for human-rights abuses.” (read more)
