It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?
For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Has anyone else in the Cordaville area seen a brown and white animal that looked a lot like a fisher?
Description: Slinking around closer to the ground than a cat. Somewhat bushy tail, out at night and the size of a large cat. Digging around in my backyard near the chipmunk holes and not the least bit concerned when I walked within 15yards of it with backyard spot lights on.. Did not look like: skunk, raccoon, opossum, fox or feline.
Coloring: face dark brown, body mostly dark brown with large white/tan spot, tail medium size brown/white.
Back in 2010 Susan shared photos of what readers agreed was a fisher cat in town. You can check out the photos and warnings in the comments by going here: https://mysouthborough.com/2010/10/15/southborough-wildlife-what-is-this-creature/
There are most definitely fisher cats in the Cordaville area. They’ve been spotted numerous times on Rockpoint Road this spring. One of my neighbors even reported seeing a mother and her young fishers. I saw one in my yard a couple years ago and it was all brown.
No way was it a groundhog? The digging, timing, boldness, and size makes me think it might have been…
Heffalump? There have been several sightings. I am digging a trap.

SOUTHBOROUGH
I’ve left our town hall after a meeting of some sort at least 1,000 times over the years. One night several weeks ago I left it wanting to cry or scream or both.
A larger than usual number of people were on their way to or from the second floor for a public hearing on a very difficult issue. Before I even got to the entrance, I heard someone on the way out but wondering if he should leave—perhaps the board responsible for the meeting were being “sly” in calling it off,” he said. I asked him what he meant; he suggested the board might pretend to call it off and then go ahead and hold the hearing after everyone left, approving the proposal when no one was there to observe. I managed not to laugh at that preposterous idea but then I felt terrible that someone would even come up with that idea about those who volunteer in our own local government.
Turns out the board was going to vote to postpone that night’s hearing because it was no longer necessary—earlier they had denied the application. But they were quite sure that the developer should appeal the denial and, in that case if he was successful, then there would be another hearing.
I still went up to the second floor to see how many people were there so, sorry to say, I got to hear people who actually believed the board might be lying—trying to trick people into leaving so they could have an easy evening of it and maybe approve the plan and that would be that. (Of course the neighbors would still have the right to appeal but that’s jumping ahead.)
Proper procedure called either for the board to close the hearing as a dead issue or adjourn the hearing until a new date (a more efficient way that would avoid a certain amount of already-handled red tape). But —HA—they could be lying, said someone—
The above was posted today in WLS. What is sad is that people have reason,( real, not imagined) to feel that way. The lack of confidence is as low as the morale in our town.
We just saw a groundhog on our back deck for first time – and we’ve had the deck for several years.
Just wanted to side step a bit from the Garfield home and say thank you to DPW/Chris Leroy for the all the nice work he has done at the Cemetery. The lawn looks great, new fresh flowers. He really did a nice job!
I would also like to thank all our Town employees for their hard work. It’s too often they get beat up on the blog and for once I would like to recognize the positive.
