The US Naval Academy is looking for future leaders to participate in two summer camp programs. And they are reaching out to our town.
Both opportunities are for high school students. One is a science and technology program for 9th-11th graders. The 2nd offers soon-to-be-seniors a fast-paced experience of life at the Naval Academy.
The camps are in Annapolis. So, what’s the Southborough connection?
According to Jim Hegarty, most of the 8th graders at Trottier visited USNA during their annual trip to Washington, DC. And Southborough has a strong connection to the academy:
Southborough is pretty unique since there are currently 4 students from Soutborough attending USNA and 2 recent graduates as well. It is incredibly rare to have so many students at USNA from a town our size!
Hegerty, a Blue & Gold Officer, acts as a volunteer admissions interviewer USNA. So, he wanted to make Southborough students aware of the opportunities.
Application deadlines for the camps are April 15, 2015. Here are more details from USNA:
Summer STEM Camp is designed to spark and cultivate interest in the many academic disciplines which make up science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A hands-on, design-based program, Naval Academy Summer STEM will challenge students to think scientifically, problem-solve creatively, and work cooperatively in teams. Open to rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders, Summer STEM is led by USNA faculty and currently enrolled midshipmen and is a great fit for students looking to broaden their understanding of STEM study and careers.
The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. Summer Seminar teaches students about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation’s leaders. If you have students you feel would be interested in pursuing an appointment to one of the nation’s service academies and serving the country as an officer, encourage them to consider attending the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar.
