Southborough Wicked Local reports that the Zoning Board of Appeals upheld the modified site plan for Fay School’s athletic field.
At an October hearing, the school publicly conceded to abutter’s request to restrict play to youth and high school leagues. The ZBA continued the hearing to allow both parties to reach an agreement. According to the article, it worked.
Southborough Youth Soccer and Fay School will get their new turf field. But while neighbors got the age restrictions they wanted from the school, they weren’t written in as conditions by the ZBA.
Following feedback from Town Recreation, last night the board left the door open for future adult recreation.
Town Recreation Director Doreen Ferguson sent a letter to the board on Dec. 1 saying she opposes to the age restriction because it defies the mission of the department to provide healthy recreation for all ages. The town might need to use the field for future programs, if it’s available. . .
In its deliberations, the board decided to nix the condition.
“I’d would prefer not to see any age-restrictions just so the town can have it for future use,” said member Paul Drepanos. “I’d rather keep it private between the two parties.”
So, what’s the big deal about adult leagues? As the article summed up:
Sanford Matathia, an attorney for the neighbors, said his clients have dealt with a number of “disturbing issues” tied to adult use, including noise and adult language. Several neighbors have complained about adults using the fields relieving themselves in their yards.
