Repairs underway, temporary children’s area set up at library

Drying out the children's room

The carpet has been torn up, damp drywall has been cut out, and fans and dehumidifiers are airing out the lower level of the library. But it will still be a while before the children’s room and meeting spaces are open again.

Facilities Director Phil Rinehart said clean up from last week’s storm, which flooded the library with three to four inches of water, will likely take multiple weeks.

“They’re working hard,” Children’s Librarian Kim Ivers told me. “But they have a lot to do.” Check out the My Southborough Flickr photostream for more images of the clean up.

Meanwhile, many children’s books have been moved upstairs into a temporary space. Carts and added bookshelves hold the children’s titles in the front room of the library.

The children’s librarians have a temporary desk set up in the space and are still available to assist you. Most importantly — at least to some little ones —  Miss Kim still has stamps at the ready.

Some of the summer reading events at the library are still happening, while others have been postponed. The rocketship making event originally scheduled for today will be rescheduled for sometime in August. The Pajama Story Hour on Wednesday night is still a go.

A very similar event happened when Judy Williams was the librarian. The problem has been there since the addition was built. Perhaps….just perhaps….the entryway from Marlborough Road can be corrected to prevent this from ever happening again. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”
