A new ladder truck to replace the one decommissioned in 2007 is estimated to cost around $1M. Compare that to what the town paid for its very first piece of firefighting equipment in 1896 — a whopping $150.
That first handtub engine known as the Falcon is still in town, now maintained by the F.D. Newton Veteran Fireman’s Association. The group will take it to Old Sturbridge Village this weekend for the second annual Fire and Ice celebration.
