Let’s try something new this week. If you like it, I’ll make it a weekly feature.
Do you have questions about Southborough you’d like to ask? Or maybe opinions (I know you have opinions!) that fall outside the topics of individual posts? I’d love it if we had a My Southborough discussion board where you could ask those questions and have those conversations. I may get around to that someday, but in the meantime we can use the blog comments.
The idea is that each week I’ll post an open discussion thread — like this one — and you can add whatever comments you want to it. What sorts of comments are appropriate?
- Questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Classifieds – things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Notices about upcoming events
- Thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Pointers to interesting or helpful resources
- etc.
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)
Okay, I’ll get us started. I cleaned out my closet recently and have a bunch of clothes to donate (mostly summer stuff). Anyone know a good place to drop them off?
there’s a goodwill dropoff at the Transfer Station, right next to the Swap Shop
there is also the Thrift Shop at St. Mark’s Parish, and of course the various churches take up collections for the poor and disadvantaged
I recently heard that the southborough fire dept. will be getting a new ambulance. Is this true?
Here’s another How Do I Get Rid of Something Question….I have about 5 -6 quarts of engine oil sitting around my garage (from the old days of when my hubby actually changed our own oil)….What can I do with it….do they take it on hazardous waste day? It’s stored in capped containers.
Cam – very good question. I checked with Fire Chief Mauro, and here’s what he had to say:
Yes! Cindy, I too have lots of “Haz Mat” (from a recent garage cleaning) that I’d like to get rid of…
Does anyone know….
What the requirements are in Southborough for disposing of hazardous materials?
If regularly scheduled Hazardous Waste day’s are the only way to dispose of “Haz Mat”?
When is the next Hazardous Waste Day?
Is there a limit on the amount of “Haz Mat” one household can “recycle” or dispose of?
Does it cost extra money (beyond the cost of a transfer station permit) to dispose of hazardous materials?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
Deductive reasoning for current poll question:
I don’t think its the high or low number (244, 53) because its just not fun to put the correct answer in as the high or low. I don’t think its the middle number either because that would make it too generic. This leads me to a 50/50 guess on the correct answer: either 107 or 198.
I voted for 107 because 198 is just too high to be southborough.
Cindy and Heather – I checked with DPW Head Karen Galligan. The only way to dispose of household haz mat items is on Hazardous Waste Day. Next one is scheduled for October 18.
Karen gave me lots of good detail. I’ll post it on the blog (hopefully) later this week.
But you don’t have to wait to recycle used motor oil. A number of places in our area take it. Here’s a list: http://search.earth911.com/?what=Used+Motor+Oil&where=01772&latitude=&longitude=&country=&province=&city=
Can anyone tell me why, after all these years, Southborough still is the ONLY town in the area without a town beach??
Hopkinton has a town beach and state park, there’s Ashland state park, Framingham & Marlboro both have beaches, Northborough shares Lake Chauncy with Westborough, I could go on! We have all this unused water, and not ONE beach we can take our kids to in town… I commented this to a friend some years ago, and he said “that’s because Southborough’s town beach is the Cape!”
Maybe not something we can do right now with budge considerations, but why NOT a town beach or town pool as most towns do?
