Report: Monkey death in Southborough violated welfare act (MWDN)

It’s more bad news for the Harvard-run New England Primate Center located off Parmenter Road. The Metrowest Daily News reported last week that the latest monkey death at the facility – there have been four in the past 19 months – was the result of a direct violation of the Animal Welfare Act. Harvard touts changes at Primate Center while activist group files complaint

The Harvard-owned New England Primate Research Center in Southborough has been under the microscope lately after four monkeys died at the facility in less than two years. Harvard recently invited a Boston Globe reporter to tour the facility to see the changes they’ve made in response to the deaths. Meanwhile, an animal rights group has filed a complaint against Harvard saying there was a fifth death that went unreported. Harvard suspends new experiments after fourth monkey dies in Southborough

Yesterday I told you the USDA would be taking a hard look at the Harvard-owned New England Primate Research Center after a monkey died under questionable circumstances in December – the third primate death in 19 months. Today comes word that a fourth monkey died on Sunday, on the very day the USDA released their report.
