In late June, I promised to follow up on the School Start Time change adopted by the school committees for fall 2021. The decision hinged on a big change for bus transportation. Last night, the school committees for Northborough-Southborough Public Schools supported a modified plan to change school bus tiers and start times for the school year after next. If implemented, the changes would mean Algonquin Regional students will Start School Later in August/September of 2021. Earlier today, Northborough and Southborough public school parents received the monthly newsletter from the Superintendent. In it, he asks for responses to three surveys with deadlines this Friday, June 5. Whether or not their kids take the bus, parents need to submit a Transportation Services form for each child who will be attending a Northborough or Southborough K-12 public school in the fall. These days, the only passengers have been Northborough and Southborough school nurses. The staff has been able to use the available buses to deliver lunches to students. Still, the district is working to renegotiate the contract given the long school closure. Last night, parents in the Northborough-Southborough School district received a September newsletter from the Superintendent. The message included news on working groups to study/advise on important issues. This morning, was a rocky start to the school year for many students waiting endlessly for a bus. This afternoon was apparently even worse. Some students were shifted to other buses. With buses somehow over capacity, kids were sitting on buses that couldn’t leave the school. Parents were complaining about kids apparently stranded and/or missing with late/insufficient communications.
