While many of us were glued to our various devices watching the election results come in last night, the Algonquin girls soccer team was on the field in the Central District 1 semifinals, and they were busy winning.
The 3rd-seed girls knocked off 7th-seed Shrewsbury by a score of 2-0. It was sweet revenge for Algonquin to topple a team that had become their nemesis. Shrewsbury ended Algonquin’s season in the district semifinals both last year and the year before.
The win means the girls will head to the district finals against top-seed Nashoba on Saturday. The time and place have not yet been announced.
The news wasn’t as good for the Algonquin boys soccer and girls field hockey teams this week. The 3rd-seed boys were upset 1-0 last night in the semifinals by 10th-seed Wachusett. On Monday night Algonquin field hockey lost a heartbreaker to Notre Dame Academy when they fell 1-0 in double overtime in the district quarterfinals.
