Events this week: Houseplants 101, Magical Miniature Gnome Homes, The Sandlot and more (Updated)

Highlights this week include making Magical Miniature Gnome Homes at Chestnut Hill Farm and enjoying an outdoor screening of The Sandlot.

  • Stretch Break Class for seniors (10:15 – 11:00 am) @ zoom: For details on semi-weekly class, see newsletter.
  • Houseplants 101 Workshop (7:00 – 8:00 pm) @ zoom: This workshop is part of the Southborough Library’s “Dig In! Garden Information Series”. Blackstone Valley Veggie Gardens will hold a special zoom session on gardening topics twice monthly. Anyone 12 or older can pre-register through Southborough Recreation. This session’s topic is: Grow houseplants to make you happy, clean your air and beautify your home. We will review several of the easiest plants to grow and will also learn to identify common plant-growing problems. For details, see dedicated post.

  • Strength Training Class for seniors (9:00 – 9:45 am) @ zoom: For details on semi-weekly class, see newsletter.
  • Junior Farmer for a Day (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: For grades K-5. Children will encounter farm animals, learn about farm-fresh food, hike the trails, create natural crafts, and explore the farm and its surroundings from the eyes of its most important team member: the farmer!   • Book Bugs: Farm Fun for Little Ones (10:00 – 11:00 am) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. For ages 2 to 6 years old, adult supervision required (siblings under 1 yr old can attend for free). Bring your little bug. . . to the farm for an interactive children’s story time. We’ll read a farm story, make a craft, and explore the farm! Each day will have a different theme such as “Goats and Sheep,” “What is a Seed,” or “How Veggies Grow.” For details, see dedicated post.

  • Middle School Farm Wednesdays (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: For kids entering grades 6-8. Middle schoolers will get to know the farmland, animals, and surrounding trails. A typical day will include hiking and nature exploration, rapport-building games, and creative time for art and journaling. Each day we will focus in on a different topic.   • Outdoor Story Time (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library’s back lawn: Join Miss Kim on the lawn (weather permitting) for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Please bring a blanket or chair.
  • Magical Miniature Gnome Home Hike and Workshop (4:00 – 5:30 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. For ages 8 years old to adult. Join us to build a special home for some magical woodland creatures. We’ll go on a hike to collect natural materials then each child can create their own fairy or gnome home. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Southborough Summer Movie Series (dusk) @ Depietri Field, 53 Parkerville Road: Free family friendly movies on the field in front of Neary School’s parking lot. Movies begin at dusk.   • Read to a Dog (5:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Children preferably ages 5 and up with some reading ability will read to a certified therapy dog.   • Preschool Farm Explorer Fridays (9:30 – 10:30 am) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. For ages 2 years 9 months to 5 years old, Adult supervision required (discount for younger siblings and siblings under 1 yr old can attend for free) Your little farm explorers will become fully immersed in what life is like here at Chestnut Hill. Each session will have a different theme. Activities may include brushing goats, planting seeds, and other age-appropriate hands-on farm “chores,” as well as art projects and stories.   • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 – 11:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Weekly, casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • All About Goats (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. Get up close and personal with the goats of Chestnut Hill Farm! We will have a hands-on learning experience with our goats including fun goat facts, what goats eat, how to care for them, and more. Children will be able to brush and/or feed the goats – grownups, don’t forget your cameras! Closed-toe shoes are recommended. For details, see dedicated post.

*The Knock on Wood concert was postponed from June 30th to July 19th. I just learned it was rescheduled to Monday, August 30th.
